What we do

Black and Wright was founded by Ed Wright and Jess Black, professional writers, who are also experts at running creative writing workshops for kids and adults.

We asked teachers what they want

We found that many of the teachers we talked to found it difficult to teach creative writing to their students. A common concern was that the curriculum was too abstract for kids to easily understand. What teachers wanted was a practical and concrete way to teach narrative.

Our approach is student centred and supplies practical tools that children can use to create narratives from the perspective of character and story.

Addressing national curriculum requirements

The courses are aimed at helping teachers teach narrative and persuasive texts to Stage 1, 2 and 3 Primary School children as well as Stage 4 High School students. We address the key national curriculum requirements for these text types, most specifically to:

  • Plan, draft and publish imaginative and persuasive texts, choosing and experimenting with text structures, language features, images

  • Compose, edit and present well-structured and coherent texts

  • Thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information and ideas and identify connections between texts when responding to and composing texts

We walk the talk

As writers, we know what it takes to write a narrative. Our course material has been specifically created to give students at any level of competency the tools needed to craft their own stories. We teach writing in chunks so that students gain confidence in their abilities as they progress through the process.

We understand that every school is different. We are available to travel to your school and cater our course hours according to your needs. Contact us and we can tailor the delivery of the course to suit you.

Our courses help teachers to find creative and fun ways of approaching a narrative that is story and character driven.
